Communication
Discord setup guide
Run a community or support server with a Discord bot. Agents read channels, reply, react, open threads and send DMs.
Agents read conversations and write messages for your company. Anything a customer or the public sees, such as a sent email or a posted message, is tier 3, so it asks first unless you decide otherwise.
Ways to connect
Company admins connect apps, on the Integrations page in Everdeck: open Discord, choose one of the ways below, follow its steps and fill in its fields. Everdeck checks what you enter before it saves anything, and asks you to confirm it’s you (your second factor) before you type any secret. How connecting works.
Bot token from your Discord application
API key.
- Open https://discord.com/developers/applications, click New Application and name it.
- On the Bot page, click Reset Token and copy the token into the form. Under Privileged Gateway Intents, turn on Message Content Intent so the bot can read what people write.
- On the OAuth2 page, use the URL Generator: tick the bot scope and the permissions View Channels, Send Messages, Send Messages in Threads, Create Public Threads, Read Message History and Add Reactions. Open the generated URL and add the bot to your server.
- In Discord, turn on Developer Mode (User Settings > Advanced), right-click your server icon, choose Copy Server ID and paste it into the form.
| Field | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Bot token | A secret: Everdeck saves it encrypted and never shows it again. Where to find it. |
| Server ID | Text. For example 123456789012345678. |
Disconnecting deletes the credentials Everdeck saved, but Everdeck can't revoke them: the key, token or password itself keeps working at Discord until you delete or rotate it there.
What agents can do
An agent uses an action only when its charter grants it, on the agent’s Tools tab, where you choose whether each one runs by itself (Auto), asks first or never runs. Each action has a risk tier: tier 3 actions, which customers or the public see, ask first unless you choose otherwise, and tier 4 actions (money, deleting things, access) always need a person. How tools and tiers work.
Actions marked Reads outside content return things people outside your company may have written. Agents treat what they read as information, never as instructions, and their riskier actions later in the same session need approval.
-
List channelsTier 0 · ReadReads outside content
discord_list_channelsList the server's channels and categories with ids, names, types and topics (threads excluded).
-
List active threadsTier 0 · ReadReads outside content
discord_list_active_threadsList the server's active threads with their parent channel.
-
Read messagesTier 0 · ReadReads outside content
discord_get_messagesRead messages in a channel or thread, newest first. Page with before or after (a message id), never both. Without the Message Content intent, text is empty except for DMs and messages that mention the bot.
-
Send a messageTier 3 · External
discord_send_messagePost a message in a channel or thread (Discord markdown, up to 2,000 characters). Mentions of @everyone, @here and roles never notify anyone; user mentions like <@123> do.
-
Reply to a messageTier 3 · External
discord_reply_to_messageReply to a specific message (shown as a reply). Discord markdown, up to 2,000 characters.
-
Edit a messageTier 3 · External
discord_edit_messageReplace the text of a message the bot sent.
-
React with an emojiTier 3 · ExternalReads outside content
discord_add_reactionAdd the bot's reaction to a message; everyone in the channel sees it. Use a Unicode emoji, or name:id for a custom server emoji.
-
Start a threadTier 3 · ExternalReads outside content
discord_create_threadOpen a public thread on a message to keep a conversation together. Archives after a day without activity.
-
Find a memberTier 0 · ReadReads outside content
discord_search_membersFind server members whose username or nickname starts with the query.
-
Send a direct messageTier 3 · ExternalReads outside content
discord_send_direct_messageSend a DM to a member by user id. Fails when the member blocks DMs from server members.
What can start work
These events from Discord can become tasks for your agents through Intake. How Intake works.
A new message was posted in a chosen channel or thread.
Connect Discord first. Then, on the Intake page, open Webhooks and sources, find it under Connector triggers and select Start watching. Then, on the Rules tab, select New rule to say which requests become tasks and who gets them.
Testing, problems and disconnecting
Everdeck checks the connection when you save it. On the connection’s page in Integrations, Test checks it again at any time.
If Discord later refuses the connection, for example because a key was deleted or a sign-in expired, the connection shows Needs attention on the Integrations page and the people who manage connections are told. Agents can’t use it until a company admin fixes it with Edit.
To stop agents using Discord, open the connection and select Disconnect. Agents stop using it at once and its saved credentials are deleted. What else happens depends on how it was connected: each way above says.
