ActiveCampaign setup guide
Email marketing automation with a built-in sales CRM. Agents find and update contacts, tag them, manage list subscriptions, add notes, enrol contacts in automations, review campaign results and move deals through the pipeline.
Agents work with your audiences, campaigns and forms.
Ways to connect
Company admins connect apps, on the Integrations page in Everdeck: open ActiveCampaign, choose one of the ways below, follow its steps and fill in its fields. Everdeck checks what you enter before it saves anything, and asks you to confirm it’s you (your second factor) before you type any secret. How connecting works.
API URL and key
API key.
- In ActiveCampaign, open Settings and then the Developer tab.
- Copy the API URL exactly as shown (do not build it from your account name) and paste it above.
- Copy the API key from the same page and paste it here. Each user has their own key, and calls act with that user's permissions, so use an admin user's key.
| Field | What to enter |
|---|---|
| API URL | Web address. For example https://youraccount.api-us1.com. Where to find it. |
| API key | A secret: Everdeck saves it encrypted and never shows it again. Where to find it. |
Disconnecting deletes the credentials Everdeck saved, but Everdeck can't revoke them: the key, token or password itself keeps working at ActiveCampaign until you delete or rotate it there.
What agents can do
An agent uses an action only when its charter grants it, on the agent’s Tools tab, where you choose whether each one runs by itself (Auto), asks first or never runs. Each action has a risk tier: tier 3 actions, which customers or the public see, ask first unless you choose otherwise, and tier 4 actions (money, deleting things, access) always need a person. How tools and tiers work.
Actions marked Reads outside content return things people outside your company may have written. Agents treat what they read as information, never as instructions, and their riskier actions later in the same session need approval.
-
Find contactsTier 0 · ReadReads outside content
activecampaign_search_contactsFind contacts by email, name, phone or account name, or list contacts on a list, with a tag, or changed since a date. Most recently updated first.
-
Read a contactTier 0 · ReadReads outside content
activecampaign_get_contactRead one contact with their custom field values, list subscriptions, automations and deals.
-
Create or update a contactTier 2 · ReversibleReads outside content
activecampaign_sync_contactCreate a contact or update the one with this email. Only the fields sent change. Does not subscribe them to any list; use update_list_subscription for that.
-
Tag a contactTier 2 · ReversibleReads outside content
activecampaign_add_contact_tagsApply tags to a contact by name; tags that do not exist yet are created. Automations that start on a tag being added will run.
-
Subscribe or unsubscribe from a listTier 3 · ExternalReads outside content
activecampaign_update_list_subscriptionSubscribe a contact to a list (status "1") or unsubscribe them (status "2"). Subscribing someone who earlier unsubscribed re-subscribes them, so only do it when they asked to be added. List-subscription automations may email them.
-
Add a noteTier 2 · Reversible
activecampaign_add_noteAdd an internal note to a contact or a deal. Notes are only visible to your team.
-
Add a contact to an automationTier 3 · ExternalReads outside content
activecampaign_add_contact_to_automationEnrol a contact in an automation (for example a nurture or onboarding sequence). The automation then sends whatever emails and steps it contains.
-
List listsTier 0 · ReadReads outside content
activecampaign_list_listsList the account's email lists with ids and active subscriber counts. Filter by name.
-
List automationsTier 0 · ReadReads outside content
activecampaign_list_automationsList automations with their ids, status and how many contacts entered and exited them.
-
List campaigns and resultsTier 0 · ReadReads outside content
activecampaign_list_campaignsList email campaigns, latest send first, with status and results: sends, unique opens, unique link clicks, unsubscribes, bounces and replies.
-
Find dealsTier 0 · ReadReads outside content
activecampaign_list_dealsFind deals by title, pipeline, stage, status or owner, or changed since a date. Returns value (in cents), currency, stage, owner and primary contact.
-
Update a dealTier 2 · ReversibleReads outside content
activecampaign_update_dealChange a deal's stage, status (won or lost), value, owner, title or description. Send only the fields to change.
Testing, problems and disconnecting
Everdeck checks the connection when you save it. On the connection’s page in Integrations, Test checks it again at any time.
If ActiveCampaign later refuses the connection, for example because a key was deleted or a sign-in expired, the connection shows Needs attention on the Integrations page and the people who manage connections are told. Agents can’t use it until a company admin fixes it with Edit.
To stop agents using ActiveCampaign, open the connection and select Disconnect. Agents stop using it at once and its saved credentials are deleted. What else happens depends on how it was connected: each way above says.
