Mailchimp setup guide
Email marketing. Agents find and update audience contacts, tag them, draft email campaigns, send test emails, and schedule or send campaigns after approval, then read the results.
Agents work with your audiences, campaigns and forms.
Ways to connect
Company admins connect apps, on the Integrations page in Everdeck: open Mailchimp, choose one of the ways below, follow its steps and fill in its fields. Everdeck checks what you enter before it saves anything, and asks you to confirm it’s you (your second factor) before you type any secret. How connecting works.
Mailchimp can be connected 2 ways. Where there’s a key or token to paste, that’s usually the quickest.
API key
API key.
- Sign in to Mailchimp as an Admin user and open the API keys section of your account (https://us1.admin.mailchimp.com/account/api/).
- Click Create New Key, name it "Everdeck" and copy the key right away; it is shown only once.
- Paste it here. The key acts with the full rights of the user who created it.
| Field | What to enter |
|---|---|
| API key | A secret: Everdeck saves it encrypted and never shows it again. Where to find it. |
Disconnecting deletes the credentials Everdeck saved, but Everdeck can't revoke them: the key, token or password itself keeps working at Mailchimp until you delete or rotate it there.
Your Mailchimp OAuth app
Your OAuth app.
This way signs in with an OAuth app you create for Mailchimp, as its steps describe: Everdeck never uses an app of its own. Register this redirect URI with your app:
https://everdeck.io/api/oauth/callback
Then save the app’s client ID and secret in Everdeck, on the connect page or under OAuth apps, and sign in.
- Open the Registered apps page in your Mailchimp account (https://us1.admin.mailchimp.com/account/oauth2/) and click Register An App.
- Fill in the form and set the Redirect URI to https://everdeck.io/api/oauth/callback, then click Create.
- Copy the Client ID and Client Secret into the form. The secret is shown only once.
- Click Connect and sign in as a Mailchimp Admin user (a more limited role makes some actions fail).
Disconnecting deletes the tokens Everdeck saved. Mailchimp documents no revocation endpoint: revoke the access in Mailchimp.
What agents can do
An agent uses an action only when its charter grants it, on the agent’s Tools tab, where you choose whether each one runs by itself (Auto), asks first or never runs. Each action has a risk tier: tier 3 actions, which customers or the public see, ask first unless you choose otherwise, and tier 4 actions (money, deleting things, access) always need a person. How tools and tiers work.
Actions marked Reads outside content return things people outside your company may have written. Agents treat what they read as information, never as instructions, and their riskier actions later in the same session need approval.
-
List audiencesTier 0 · ReadReads outside content
mailchimp_list_audiencesList the account's audiences (Mailchimp's API calls them lists) with their ids and contact counts. Use an audience id as list_id in the other actions.
-
Find contactsTier 0 · ReadReads outside content
mailchimp_search_membersFind contacts by full email address or by first or last name, across all audiences or in one. Returns each match's id (the subscriber hash other actions need), status, merge fields and tags.
-
Add or update a contactTier 3 · ExternalReads outside content
mailchimp_add_or_update_memberAdd a contact to an audience by email, or update them if they are already there. status_if_new only applies to new contacts: "pending" emails them a confirmation link (double opt-in), "subscribed" records that they agreed to marketing email (welcome automations may send), "transactional" adds them without marketing consent. Existing contacts keep their status.
-
Update contact fieldsTier 2 · ReversibleReads outside content
mailchimp_update_memberChange an existing contact's merge fields (name, phone, address or custom fields). Does not change their subscription status.
-
Tag or untag a contactTier 2 · ReversibleReads outside content
mailchimp_update_member_tagsAdd or remove tags on a contact. Tags that do not exist yet are created. Automations triggered by a tag fire unless is_syncing is true.
-
List campaignsTier 0 · ReadReads outside content
mailchimp_list_campaignsList email campaigns, newest first, with status, subject, audience, send time and headline open and click rates. Filter by status or audience.
-
Read a campaign reportTier 0 · ReadReads outside content
mailchimp_get_campaign_reportResults of a sent campaign: recipients, opens, clicks, bounces, unsubscribes, abuse reports and e-commerce revenue. The campaign's own rates (opens, clicks) are fractions between 0 and 1; list_stats (the audience's average, for comparison) are percentages from 0 to 100.
-
Draft a campaignTier 2 · ReversibleReads outside content
mailchimp_create_campaignCreate a draft regular email campaign for an audience (optionally one saved segment). Add the email body with set_campaign_content; nothing is sent until send or schedule.
-
Set campaign contentTier 2 · ReversibleReads outside content
mailchimp_set_campaign_contentSet a draft campaign's email body from HTML. The plain-text version is generated from it. Include the *|UNSUB|* merge tag so readers can unsubscribe.
-
Send a test emailTier 3 · ExternalReads outside content
mailchimp_send_test_emailSend a test version of a draft campaign to a few addresses, for example the person approving it.
-
Schedule a campaignTier 3 · ExternalReads outside content
mailchimp_schedule_campaignSchedule a ready draft campaign to send to its audience at a future time. The time must be in UTC on a quarter hour (:00, :15, :30 or :45). Needs a paid plan.
-
Send a campaign nowTier 3 · ExternalReads outside content
mailchimp_send_campaignSend a ready draft campaign to its whole audience immediately. This cannot be undone.
Testing, problems and disconnecting
Everdeck checks the connection when you save it. On the connection’s page in Integrations, Test checks it again at any time.
If Mailchimp later refuses the connection, for example because a key was deleted or a sign-in expired, the connection shows Needs attention on the Integrations page and the people who manage connections are told. Agents can’t use it until a company admin fixes it with Edit or Reconnect.
To stop agents using Mailchimp, open the connection and select Disconnect. Agents stop using it at once and its saved credentials are deleted. What else happens depends on how it was connected: each way above says.
