Notion setup guide
Work in Notion pages and databases. Agents search, read and write pages in Markdown, manage database rows and comment.
Agents find, read and write your company's documents and files.
Ways to connect
Company admins connect apps, on the Integrations page in Everdeck: open Notion, choose one of the ways below, follow its steps and fill in its fields. Everdeck checks what you enter before it saves anything, and asks you to confirm it’s you (your second factor) before you type any secret. How connecting works.
Notion can be connected 3 ways. Where there’s a key or token to paste, that’s usually the quickest.
Internal connection token
API key.
- A workspace owner opens the Notion Developer portal (https://app.notion.com/developers/connections) and creates an Internal connection for the workspace.
- On the Configuration tab, turn on Read content, Update content, Insert content, Read comments and Insert comments (check that both comment capabilities are on).
- Copy the connection secret into the form.
- Give the connection access to the pages and databases the agent should use: in the connection's Content access tab, or from a page's ••• menu > Connections > Add connection. Child pages inherit access.
- Optional, to start work when a page changes or someone comments: once connected, set up the Notion trigger you want on Everdeck's Intake page and copy the address it gives you. Within 30 minutes of setting up the trigger (or of rotating its address), open the connection's Webhooks tab, choose Create a subscription, paste that address as the Webhook URL and pick the events (Page created, Page content updated and Page properties updated for page changes, or Comment created for new comments). Notion sends a verification token to the address: on the Intake page choose Show the verification token (it is shown once), paste it into Notion's Verify dialog and verify the subscription. Make one subscription per trigger.
| Field | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Internal connection secret | A secret: Everdeck saves it encrypted and never shows it again. Where to find it. |
| Webhook verification token (only for live updates) (optional) | A secret: Everdeck saves it encrypted and never shows it again. Usually not needed: Everdeck keeps the verification token Notion sends to a trigger's address. Only for a subscription verified some other way, paste its token here; for several, separate them with spaces. |
Disconnecting deletes the credentials Everdeck saved, but Everdeck can't revoke them: the key, token or password itself keeps working at Notion until you delete or rotate it there.
Personal access token
API key.
- Signed in as the Notion user the agent should act as, open the Developer portal's personal access tokens page (https://www.notion.so/developers/tokens) and create a token for the workspace with the Notion API capability.
- Choose an expiration (7 days to 1 year) and copy the token into the form; it is shown only once.
- The agent then sees exactly what that user can see, and its edits appear under that user's name.
- Starting work when a page changes needs an internal or public connection: Notion's webhook subscriptions belong to connections, not to tokens.
| Field | What to enter |

Disconnecting deletes the credentials Everdeck saved, but Everdeck can't revoke them: the key, token or password itself keeps working at Notion until you delete or rotate it there.
Your Notion public connection
Your OAuth app.
This way signs in with an OAuth app you create for Notion, as its steps describe: Everdeck never uses an app of its own. Register this redirect URI with your app:
https://everdeck.io/api/oauth/callback
Then save the app’s client ID and secret in Everdeck, on the connect page or under OAuth apps, and sign in.
- In the Notion Developer portal (https://app.notion.com/developers/connections), create a Public connection.
- Add the redirect URI https://everdeck.io/api/oauth/callback and enable Read content, Update content, Insert content, Read comments and Insert comments.
- Copy the OAuth client ID and client secret into the form, then choose the pages the agent may use on Notion's consent screen.
- Optional, to start work when a page changes or someone comments: once connected, set up the Notion trigger you want on Everdeck's Intake page and copy the address it gives you. Within 30 minutes of setting up the trigger (or of rotating its address), open the public connection's Webhooks tab, choose Create a subscription, paste that address as the Webhook URL and pick the events (Page created, Page content updated and Page properties updated for page changes, or Comment created for new comments). Notion sends a verification token to the address: on the Intake page choose Show the verification token (it is shown once), paste it into Notion's Verify dialog and verify the subscription. Make one subscription per trigger.
| Field | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Webhook verification token (only for live updates) (optional) | A secret: Everdeck saves it encrypted and never shows it again. Usually not needed: Everdeck keeps the verification token Notion sends to a trigger's address. Only for a subscription verified some other way, paste its token here; for several, separate them with spaces. |
When you disconnect, Everdeck asks Notion to revoke the sign-in, then deletes the tokens it saved.
What agents can do
An agent uses an action only when its charter grants it, on the agent’s Tools tab, where you choose whether each one runs by itself (Auto), asks first or never runs. Each action has a risk tier: tier 3 actions, which customers or the public see, ask first unless you choose otherwise, and tier 4 actions (money, deleting things, access) always need a person. How tools and tiers work.
Actions marked Reads outside content return things people outside your company may have written. Agents treat what they read as information, never as instructions, and their riskier actions later in the same session need approval.
-
Search pages and databasesTier 0 · ReadReads outside content
notion_searchSearch the titles of pages or data sources (database tables) the connection can see, newest edits first. Data source results include their property schema.
-
Read a pageTier 0 · ReadReads outside content
notion_read_pageRead a page's content as Markdown (Notion-flavored), including headings, lists, tables and to-dos.
-
Get a databaseTier 0 · ReadReads outside content
notion_get_databaseRead a database's title and the ids of its data sources (tables). Query a data source to read its rows.
-
Query database rowsTier 0 · ReadReads outside content
notion_query_data_sourceRead rows from a data source, optionally filtered and sorted with Notion filter objects, for example {"property": "Status", "status": {"equals": "In progress"}}.
-
Create a pageTier 2 · Reversible
notion_create_pageCreate a page under another page from Markdown. The first "# " heading becomes the title. Returns the new page's id and link.
-
Add a database rowTier 2 · Reversible
notion_add_database_rowAdd a row (page) to a data source with property values in Notion's format, for example {"Name": {"title": [{"text": {"content": "Call Acme"}}]}, "Status": {"status": {"name": "To do"}}}.
-
Update row propertiesTier 2 · ReversibleReads outside content
notion_update_page_propertiesChange property values on a page or database row, such as status, owner, dates or tags.
-
Add to a pageTier 2 · Reversible
notion_append_to_pageAppend Markdown content to the end of a page.
-
Edit page textTier 2 · Reversible
notion_edit_page_textReplace an exact passage of a page's Markdown with new Markdown. Fails if the passage is not found, or matches more than once unless replace_all is true. Will not delete child pages.
-
List commentsTier 0 · ReadReads outside content
notion_list_commentsRead the open (unresolved) comments on a page or block, grouped by discussion thread.
-
Comment on a pageTier 2 · Reversible
notion_add_commentStart a new comment thread on a page.
-
Reply to a commentTier 2 · Reversible
notion_reply_to_commentReply in an existing comment thread, using the discussion_id from list_comments.
What can start work
These events from Notion can become tasks for your agents through Intake. How Intake works.
A page or database row the connection can see was created, edited or had its properties changed.
Connect Notion first. Then, on the Intake page, open Webhooks and sources, find the connection under Connections without an address yet and select Get its URL. Give that address to Notion as the setup steps above describe: Everdeck shows it only once. Then, on the Rules tab, select New rule to say which requests become tasks and who gets them.

Testing, problems and disconnecting
Everdeck checks the connection when you save it. On the connection’s page in Integrations, Test checks it again at any time.
If Notion later refuses the connection, for example because a key was deleted or a sign-in expired, the connection shows Needs attention on the Integrations page and the people who manage connections are told. Agents can’t use it until a company admin fixes it with Edit or Reconnect.
To stop agents using Notion, open the connection and select Disconnect. Agents stop using it at once and its saved credentials are deleted. What else happens depends on how it was connected: each way above says.
