Projects & tasks
Trello setup guide
Run work on Trello boards. Agents find and read cards, create cards, move them between lists, update due dates and members, and comment.
Agents keep projects moving: they read, create and update tasks and issues where your team works.
Ways to connect
Company admins connect apps, on the Integrations page in Everdeck: open Trello, choose one of the ways below, follow its steps and fill in its fields. Everdeck checks what you enter before it saves anything, and asks you to confirm it’s you (your second factor) before you type any secret. How connecting works.
Trello can be connected 2 ways. Where there’s a key or token to paste, that’s usually the quickest.
API key and token
API key.
- Sign in to Trello as the member the agent should act as, open https://trello.com/apps/admin and create a new app (Power-Up) for your Workspace.
- Open the app's Trello Auth tab, select Generate a new API Key, and copy the key together with the Secret shown with it.
- Open https://trello.com/1/authorize?expiration=never&scope=read,write&response_type=token&name=Everdeck&key=YOUR_API_KEY (with your key), approve, and copy the token.
- Paste the API key, token and secret into the form.
- Optional, to start work when a card changes: once connected, set up the Trello trigger on Everdeck's Intake page and copy the address it gives you. Trello makes webhooks only through its API, so run this with your key, token, the board's ID (open the board, add .json to its address and copy the first "id") and that address: curl -X POST https://api.trello.com/1/webhooks/ -H 'Authorization: OAuth oauth_consumer_key="YOUR_API_KEY", oauth_token="YOUR_TOKEN"' --data-urlencode "callbackURL=ADDRESS" --data-urlencode "idModel=BOARD_ID" --data-urlencode "description=Everdeck". Trello signs deliveries with the Secret in this connection, so keep it filled in. Make one webhook per board.
| Field | What to enter |
|---|---|
| API key | Text. Where to find it. |
| Token | A secret: Everdeck saves it encrypted and never shows it again. |
| Secret (optional, only for live updates) | A secret: Everdeck saves it encrypted and never shows it again. The Secret shown with your API key on the app's Trello Auth tab. Trello signs every webhook delivery with it, and Everdeck accepts only deliveries signed with it. One app has one secret, so there is nothing to separate when several webhooks send here. |
Disconnecting deletes the credentials Everdeck saved, but Everdeck can't revoke them: the key, token or password itself keeps working at Trello until you delete or rotate it there.
Your Trello OAuth 2.0 app
Your OAuth app.
This way signs in with an OAuth app you create for Trello, as its steps describe: Everdeck never uses an app of its own. Register this redirect URI with your app:
https://everdeck.io/api/oauth/callback
Then save the app’s client ID and secret in Everdeck, on the connect page or under OAuth apps, and sign in.
- Open https://trello.com/apps/admin, create or pick your app, and open the OAuth 2.0 tab.
- Choose a confidential client, add the callback URL https://everdeck.io/api/oauth/callback, and select the scopes read:board:trello, write:board:trello and read:member:trello.
- Copy the client ID and client secret into the form, then approve access.
- Optional, to start work when a card changes: once connected, set up the Trello trigger on Everdeck's Intake page and copy the address it gives you. Trello makes webhooks only through its API: on the same app's Trello Auth tab generate an API key, put the Secret shown with it in this connection's Secret field, and create the webhook with that key and a token as the API key and token way of connecting describes. Make one webhook per board.
| Field | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Secret (optional, only for live updates) | A secret: Everdeck saves it encrypted and never shows it again. The Secret shown with your app's API key on its Trello Auth tab, when you make the webhook with that key. Deliveries signed with the app's OAuth client secret are accepted too. One app has one secret, so there is nothing to separate when several webhooks send here. |
The scopes Everdeck asks for:
read:board:trellowrite:board:trelloread:member:trellooffline_access
Disconnecting deletes the tokens Everdeck saved. Remove Everdeck under Connected apps in the person's Atlassian account settings.
What agents can do
An agent uses an action only when its charter grants it, on the agent’s Tools tab, where you choose whether each one runs by itself (Auto), asks first or never runs. Each action has a risk tier: tier 3 actions, which customers or the public see, ask first unless you choose otherwise, and tier 4 actions (money, deleting things, access) always need a person. How tools and tiers work.
Actions marked Reads outside content return things people outside your company may have written. Agents treat what they read as information, never as instructions, and their riskier actions later in the same session need approval.
-
Search cardsTier 0 · ReadReads outside content
trello_search_cardsSearch cards by text across your boards (or the boards you list), with each card's board and list. Trello search syntax works, for example "is:open due:week".
-
List boardsTier 0 · ReadReads outside content
trello_list_boardsList the open boards this member belongs to.
-
List a board's listsTier 0 · ReadReads outside content
trello_list_listsList the open lists (columns) on a board, in order. Use a list id to create or move cards.
-
List a board's cardsTier 0 · ReadReads outside content
trello_list_cardsList the open cards on a board with their list, due date, members and labels.
-
Read a cardTier 0 · ReadReads outside content
trello_get_cardRead one card: name, description, list, dates, members, labels, checklists and its latest comments.
-
Read board activityTier 0 · ReadReads outside content
trello_list_board_activityRead recent activity on a board: cards created, changed and moved, and comments, newest first. Use since to see only what happened after a time.
-
List board membersTier 0 · ReadReads outside content
trello_list_board_membersList the members of a board with their ids, for assigning cards.
-
List board labelsTier 0 · ReadReads outside content
trello_list_labelsList the labels defined on a board with their ids and colors.
-
Create a cardTier 2 · ReversibleReads outside content
trello_create_cardCreate a card in a list, optionally with a description, due date, members and labels.
-
Update or move a cardTier 2 · ReversibleReads outside content
trello_update_cardChange a card: move it to another list (list_id), rename it, change the description, due date or members, mark the due date complete, or archive it (closed true; reversible). Only the fields you give change.
-
Add a member to a cardTier 2 · ReversibleReads outside content
trello_add_card_memberAdd a board member to a card (Trello's way of assigning work). They are notified.
-
Comment on a cardTier 2 · Reversible
trello_add_commentAdd a comment to a card. Everyone who can see the board sees it (on a public board, that is anyone with the link).
What can start work
These events from Trello can become tasks for your agents through Intake. How Intake works.
A card on a watched board was created, changed, moved or commented on.
Connect Trello first. Then, on the Intake page, open Webhooks and sources, find the connection under Connections without an address yet and select Get its URL. Give that address to Trello as the setup steps above describe: Everdeck shows it only once. Then, on the Rules tab, select New rule to say which requests become tasks and who gets them.
Testing, problems and disconnecting
Everdeck checks the connection when you save it. On the connection’s page in Integrations, Test checks it again at any time.
If Trello later refuses the connection, for example because a key was deleted or a sign-in expired, the connection shows Needs attention on the Integrations page and the people who manage connections are told. Agents can’t use it until a company admin fixes it with Edit or Reconnect.
To stop agents using Trello, open the connection and select Disconnect. Agents stop using it at once and its saved credentials are deleted. What else happens depends on how it was connected: each way above says.
