Web search (Brave Search API) setup guide
Search the web, news, images, videos and places with your own Brave Search API key. Agents find sources, check recent news and read extracted page text for research.
Building blocks: send and receive requests, read the web and other everyday tools.
Ways to connect
Company admins connect apps, on the Integrations page in Everdeck: open Web search (Brave Search API), choose one of the ways below, follow its steps and fill in its fields. Everdeck checks what you enter before it saves anything, and asks you to confirm it’s you (your second factor) before you type any secret. How connecting works.
Brave Search API key
API key.
- Create an account at https://api-dashboard.search.brave.com/register. Activating a plan needs a credit card.
- Open Plans (https://api-dashboard.search.brave.com/app/subscriptions/subscribe) and activate the Search plan: prepaid credits at $5 per 1,000 requests, with $5 of free credit added every month.
- Open API Keys (https://api-dashboard.search.brave.com/app/keys), click Add API Key, name it "Everdeck" and copy the key into the form.
| Field | What to enter |
|---|---|
| API key | A secret: Everdeck saves it encrypted and never shows it again. Where to find it. |
Disconnecting deletes the credentials Everdeck saved, but Everdeck can't revoke them: the key, token or password itself keeps working at Brave Search until you delete or rotate it there.
What agents can do
An agent uses an action only when its charter grants it, on the agent’s Tools tab, where you choose whether each one runs by itself (Auto), asks first or never runs. Each action has a risk tier: tier 3 actions, which customers or the public see, ask first unless you choose otherwise, and tier 4 actions (money, deleting things, access) always need a person. How tools and tiers work.
Actions marked Reads outside content return things people outside your company may have written. Agents treat what they read as information, never as instructions, and their riskier actions later in the same session need approval.

web_search_search_webSearch the web. Returns ranked pages (title, URL, snippet, age) plus news, discussions, FAQs and an infobox when relevant. The query supports operators: "exact phrase", -word, site:example.com, filetype:pdf. Ask for the next page only when more_results_available is true.
-
Search newsTier 0 · ReadReads outside content
web_search_search_newsFind recent news articles. Returns title, URL, snippet, source site and publication time. Use freshness pd for the past day or pw for the past week.
-
Search imagesTier 0 · ReadReads outside content
web_search_search_imagesFind images. Returns each image's title, the page it appears on, the original image URL, its size and a thumbnail. Check the source page's licence before reusing an image.
-
Search videosTier 0 · ReadReads outside content
web_search_search_videosFind videos. Returns title, URL, description, age, duration, creator and publisher.
-
Find placesTier 0 · ReadReads outside content
web_search_search_placesFind businesses and points of interest near a place: name, address, phone, website, rating, opening hours, categories and distance. Give a location ("san francisco ca united states", "tokyo japan") or latitude and longitude, and set country for searches outside the US; without a location, results are drawn from everywhere and are less precise.
-
Search and read top pagesTier 0 · ReadReads outside content
web_search_search_with_contentSearch the web and get text extracted from the most relevant pages, ready to quote and cite: for each source its URL, title and the passages that match the query. Use this for research questions instead of searching and then opening each page.
What can start work
These events from Brave Search can become tasks for your agents through Intake. How Intake works.
A news article matching a saved search was published (checked every hour).
Connect Web search (Brave Search API) first. Then, on the Intake page, open Webhooks and sources, find it under Connector triggers and select Start watching. Then, on the Rules tab, select New rule to say which requests become tasks and who gets them.
Testing, problems and disconnecting
Everdeck checks the connection when you save it. On the connection’s page in Integrations, Test checks it again at any time.
If Brave Search later refuses the connection, for example because a key was deleted or a sign-in expired, the connection shows Needs attention on the Integrations page and the people who manage connections are told. Agents can’t use it until a company admin fixes it with Edit.
To stop agents using Web search (Brave Search API), open the connection and select Disconnect. Agents stop using it at once and its saved credentials are deleted. What else happens depends on how it was connected: each way above says.
