Ways to connect

A company admin connects Gusto from the Integrations page in Everdeck. Keys, tokens and secrets are encrypted before they're stored, and the connection's Test button checks it works before any agent uses it.

Gusto opens its API only to approved partners, not to apps a company creates for its own account, so this integration depends on Everdeck becoming a Gusto partner.

  • Your Gusto developer app (Gusto-approved apps only) Your OAuth app

Create an OAuth app of your own with Gusto, paste its client ID and secret into Everdeck, then sign in to Gusto and approve access. Access runs through your own app, never one Everdeck shares with other customers.

What agents can do with Gusto

An agent can only use the actions its charter grants. Each action has a risk tier, and the tier decides whether it runs on its own, asks first or always asks a person.

Runs on its own 11

Looking things up, writing to Everdeck's own records and changes one step can undo. Once an agent's charter grants one of these, it runs without asking, unless you set it to Ask first in the charter or one of your approval rules covers it.

  • Read the company Tier 0 · Read Outside content

Read the connected company: legal and trade name, entity type, Gusto plan tier, status, locations, paid time off types and the primary payroll admin (returned only when the app has the company_admin:read scope; non-work locations need employees:read).

  • List or find employees Tier 0 · Read Outside content

List employees (onboarding, active and terminated) with title, department, manager, hire date, work email and onboarding status. Search by name or filter to active or terminated people. Pay rates appear only when the app has the compensations:read scope.

  • Read an employee Tier 0 · Read Outside content

Read one employee with jobs and work location, eligible paid time off (policy, accrual and current balance), terminations and the record's version, which update_employee needs.

  • Update an employee's name or work email Tier 2 · Reversible Outside content

Change an employee's legal or preferred name or work email. Pass the version from get_employee or list_employees; a 409 means the record changed since, so read it again. Personal email, birth date, pay and job details are not changed here.

  • List contractors Tier 0 · Read Outside content

List contractors, individual and business, active and inactive, with wage type, hourly rate, start and dismissal dates, department and onboarding status.

  • List departments Tier 0 · Read Outside content

List departments with the employees and contractors in each, and each department's version for add_to_department.

  • Move people into a department Tier 2 · Reversible Outside content

Assign employees and/or contractors to a department. Pass the department's current version from list_departments; a stale version is refused, so list again and retry.

  • List time off requests Tier 0 · Read Outside content

List time off requests with employee name, policy, status (pending, approved, declined, consumed), the hours per day and notes. Give start_date and/or end_date to limit the window. Requests are approved or declined in Gusto itself; the API cannot change them.

  • Read time off balance history Tier 0 · Read Outside content

List an employee's accruals, usage and adjustments for vacation or sick time, each with the balance after it. The latest entry is the current balance.

  • List payrolls Tier 0 · Read Outside content

List payroll runs with pay period, check date, deadline, whether processed, and totals. Without dates it returns processed regular payrolls from the last 6 months; ask for unprocessed ones to see what is coming up. end_date can be at most 3 months ahead and the range at most a year.

  • Read a payroll Tier 0 · Read Outside content

Read one payroll run: status and dates, and once calculated or processed, totals and each employee's gross pay, net pay, taxes, deductions and hours. Employee compensations are paged (at most 100 per page); ask for the next page when X-Total-Pages says there are more.

Asks first 1

Anything a customer or the public sees. By default a charter grants these as Ask first: the agent sends an approval request and waits for a yes. A company admin can switch one to Auto in the charter after confirming with their second factor. Even then, once an agent has read outside content, such as a customer's email, its tier 3 and 4 actions need a person by default for the rest of that session.

  • Add a new hire Tier 3 · External Outside content

Add an employee to the company in Gusto. With self_onboarding (the default) the new hire enters their own tax, bank and personal details through Gusto, which contacts them at their personal email; job, pay and start date are finished by an admin in Gusto.

Actions marked Outside content return what people outside your company may have written, such as emails or comments. Agents treat it as information to check, never as instructions.

What can start work

Nothing in Gusto starts agent work by itself. Agents use it while they work on tasks from the board, from other agents or from the sources on the Intake page.

Work an agent can take on

Examples for apps in HR & recruiting. What an agent does with Gusto depends on the actions you grant it.

  • List who is out this week, and what time off is waiting for a decision.
  • Prepare a new hire's record from their details for a person to check.
