Ways to connect

A company admin connects PostgreSQL from the Integrations page in Everdeck. Keys, tokens and secrets are encrypted before they're stored, and the connection's Test button checks it works before any agent uses it.

  • Connection string API key

Copy a key or token from PostgreSQL and paste it into Everdeck.

  • Host, user and password Username and password

Enter the account details the connect form asks for, with a password or secret from PostgreSQL.

What agents can do with PostgreSQL

An agent can only use the actions its charter grants. Each action has a risk tier, and the tier decides whether it runs on its own, asks first or always asks a person.

Runs on its own 6

Looking things up, writing to Everdeck's own records and changes one step can undo. Once an agent's charter grants one of these, it runs without asking, unless you set it to Ask first in the charter or one of your approval rules covers it.

  • List schemas Tier 0 · Read Outside content

The database's schemas (other than PostgreSQL's own) with how many tables and views each holds that the connection can read.

  • List tables Tier 0 · Read Outside content

Tables, views and materialized views in a schema that the connection can read, with estimated row count, size and the table comment. Optionally filter by part of the name.

  • Describe a table Tier 0 · Read Outside content

A table's or view's columns (name, type, nullable, default, comment), primary key, unique constraints, foreign keys in both directions, indexes and estimated row count. Read this before writing SQL that joins tables.

  • Preview rows Tier 0 · Read Outside content

The first rows of a table or view, optionally only some columns and sorted by one column (for example the newest orders by created_at, descending).

  • Run a read-only SQL query Tier 0 · Read Outside content

Run one read-only SQL query (SELECT, WITH ... SELECT, VALUES or TABLE) and get column names and up to max_rows rows. Use $1, $2... placeholders with params for values instead of pasting them into the SQL. Writes, DDL, several statements, and queries running longer than the timeout are refused. Qualify tables with their schema when not in public.

  • Check a query plan Tier 0 · Read Outside content

Show PostgreSQL's plan for a read-only query without running it: estimated cost and rows, and whether it uses indexes or scans whole tables. Use it before a query on a big table.

Actions marked Outside content return what people outside your company may have written, such as emails or comments. Agents treat it as information to check, never as instructions.

What can start work

Set a trigger up on the Intake page, and your rules there turn what arrives into tasks for your agents.

  • New rows appeared in a table the company chooses (for example orders, signups or tickets), detected by an increasing ID or timestamp column.

Everdeck checks PostgreSQL every 5 minutes.

Work an agent can take on

Examples for apps in Analytics & data. What an agent does with PostgreSQL depends on the actions you grant it.

  • Write a weekly summary of traffic, sign-ups or other numbers you watch.
  • Answer a question like "which pages brought the most visitors last month?" from your data.

Set it up

The PostgreSQL setup guide walks through each way to connect: what to set up first and the fields to fill in, then how to start work from its triggers on the Intake page.
