Ways to connect

A company admin connects Slack from the Integrations page in Everdeck. Keys, tokens and secrets are encrypted before they're stored, and the connection's Test button checks it works before any agent uses it.

Every way in uses an app you create with Slack, so access stays under your control. The setup guide walks you through it.

  • Bot token from your Slack app Token

Copy a key or token from Slack and paste it into Everdeck.

  • Your Slack app (OAuth install) Your OAuth app

Create an OAuth app of your own with Slack, paste its client ID and secret into Everdeck, then sign in to Slack and approve access. Access runs through your own app, never one Everdeck shares with other customers.

What agents can do with Slack

An agent can only use the actions its charter grants. Each action has a risk tier, and the tier decides whether it runs on its own, asks first or always asks a person.

Runs on its own 7

Looking things up, writing to Everdeck's own records and changes one step can undo. Once an agent's charter grants one of these, it runs without asking, unless you set it to Ask first in the charter or one of your approval rules covers it.

  • List channels Tier 0 · Read Outside content

List public and private channels the app can see, with id, name, topic and whether the bot is a member.

  • Read channel messages Tier 0 · Read Outside content

Read recent top-level messages in a channel or DM the bot is in, newest first. oldest and latest are Slack timestamps (seconds since epoch, for example 1759900000.000000).

  • Read a thread Tier 0 · Read Outside content

Read a thread's parent message and its replies, oldest first.

  • Search messages Tier 0 · Read Outside content

Search messages in public channels (Slack Real-time Search). Accepts Slack search filters with ids in angle brackets, for example "invoice in:<#C0123ABC> from:<@U0123ABC> after:2026-09-01". Needs the User OAuth Token.

  • Look up a person Tier 0 · Read Outside content

Get a member's name, title, email and time zone from their user id (U...).

  • Find a person by email Tier 0 · Read Outside content

Find a workspace member by email address to mention or message them.

  • React with an emoji Tier 2 · Reversible Outside content

Add an emoji reaction to a message, for example eyes to show the request was seen.

Asks first 4

Anything a customer or the public sees. By default a charter grants these as Ask first: the agent sends an approval request and waits for a yes. A company admin can switch one to Auto in the charter after confirming with their second factor. Even then, once an agent has read outside content, such as a customer's email, its tier 3 and 4 actions need a person by default for the rest of that session.

  • Post a message Tier 3 · External

Post a message to a channel (id) or to a person (their user id opens a DM with the app). Uses Slack mrkdwn: *bold*, _italic_, <@U123> mentions, <https://example.com|links>.

  • Reply in a thread Tier 3 · External

Reply in a message's thread. Set also_send_to_channel to show the reply in the channel too.

  • Edit a message Tier 3 · External

Replace the text of a message the bot posted earlier.

  • Share a file Tier 3 · External Outside content

Upload a file from the company's files to a channel or thread, with an optional comment.

Actions marked Outside content return what people outside your company may have written, such as emails or comments. Agents treat it as information to check, never as instructions.

What can start work

Set a trigger up on the Intake page, and your rules there turn what arrives into tasks for your agents.

  • Someone mentioned the bot in a channel (Events API event app_mention).

Slack sends it to the address the Intake page gives you, as it happens.

  • A message was posted in a channel, private channel or DM the bot is in (Events API events message.channels, message.groups, message.im).

Slack sends it to the address the Intake page gives you, as it happens.

  • Approvals in Slack

When an agent asks for approval, linked approvers can approve or reject it with buttons in Slack, up to the tier your company chooses, and the agent carries on. Tier 4 is always decided in Everdeck. Company admins set it up on the Chat approvals page.

Work an agent can take on

Examples for apps in Communication. What an agent does with Slack depends on the actions you grant it.

  • Read new messages, sort out what needs a reply and draft the answers for you to check.
  • Post a short summary of the day's finished tasks where your team will see it.
  • Send a customer a follow-up once you've approved the wording.

Set it up

The Slack setup guide walks through each way to connect: what to set up first and the fields to fill in, then how to start work from its triggers on the Intake page.
